The Big Ditch formerly known as Main Street
Silver City's streets were platted in a grid pattern in 1871 without sufficient regard for the seasonal rainwater runoff. Rains in the summer of 1895 sent a river flowing down Main Street; destroying much of the town's busy business center. In 1902, flood waters turned what remained of Main Street into a big ditch -- parts of which are 60 feet deep.
Main Street is no more. The ditch is now a city park.
